Canberra Australia
Located on the ancient lands of the
Indigenous Ngunnawal people,
Canberra’s name is thought to mean
‘meeting place’, derived from the
Aboriginal word Kamberra. European
settlers first came in the 1830s,
and the area was chosen for the
federal capital in 1908. Canberra’s
special contrast of nature and urban
living was planned in 1912 by master
designer, Walter Burley Griffin, a
Chicago architect.
Canberra is often described by
Australians who haven't been there
as a boring town, full of
politicians, bureaucrats - and not
much else. But those who go there
find beautiful galleries and museums
clustered around a lake. |

The Celebrate Canberra Festival,
held over 10 days in March, marks the
city's birthday with music, food, a mardi gras, displays, a raft race and a
parade. March also brings the huge
National Folk Festival to Canberra.
Spring is celebrated with the Floriade
Festival, when Commonwealth Park becomes
a riot of floral colour.
The essence of Australia’s culture,
history and way of life is reflected in
the national museums, galleries and
institutions in Canberra. These national
icons hold and share the treasures of
our nation, offering an intriguing
insight into Australian character and
democracy, and our journey from an
Indigenous continent to a modern nation.
